10 Cleaning Tips that Save Energy

1. Clean your Cleaning Tools
Vacuums should be cleaned regularly to ensure they are operating efficiently. Going beyond emptying the canister or bag means your vacuum will maintain sucking power and last longer. First, check the hose for clogs; use a wire hanger to remove any debris, then use water and a mild detergent like dishsoap to give the hose and attachments a good clean. Next, remove the roller brush and use a scissor to remove any hair that has accumulated. While the brush is removed, turn the vacuum on (outside) and expel any dirt that has built up inside the machine. Last, wash or replace the vacuum filter. The filter ensures that the air expelled from the vacuum is clean, a clean filter also allows your vacuum to operate at its designed efficiency.2. Window Cleaning + Check for Drafts
Conditioned air escaping from the home through improper sealing around doors and windows is a big source of wasted energy in homes. While cleaning your windows, check for cracks in sealant or noticeable drafts. Fill any cracks and replace damaged weather stripping around your home to prevent air exchange. Also, be sure to clean the window tracks, dirty window frames can prevent the window from closing properly, this can also lead to energy loss in your home.3. Window Coverings
Shades or blinds can help prevent heat escape in the winter. They can also help lower the cooling requirements by blocking out hot afternoon sun in the summer. Install window shades and close them during the day to reduce your reliance on AC or electric fans.4. Refrigerator Coils & Seals
When you give your refrigerator a deep clean this spring, remember to remove any dust that has accumulated on the coils. Clean coils means your refrigerator can keep your food cold more efficiently. Check the rubber seal around the door of your refrigerator and freezer. The seals should be clean to ensure the doors close properly and keep the heat out. If your magnetic seal is damaged, it should be repaired or replaced.5. Oven Cleaning
Just like your refrigerator, your oven needs to be clean to work efficiently. Heating elements, inside the oven and on the stove top should be clear of any grime and grease. While cleaning the inside of the oven, pay close attention to the door and seal. A clean oven door will help prevent heat from escaping during use.6. Clean your Washing Machine
Maintaining a clean washing machine means it lasts longer, it also prevents moldy smells caused by build up of stale soap and fabric softener. First, check your equipment manual for cleaning instructions. Different sources recommend cleaning with different solutions, baking soda & vinegar, bleach or cleaning tablets. We recommend starting with baking soda & vinegar, and moving towards stronger chemicals if needed. For a front loading washing machine, run an empty cycle with your cleaning solution on high heat. When the cycle is finished, wipe down the interior of the drum. Be sure to completely clean the rubber gasket and remove any soap build up on the door. Detailed instructions for cleaning a top-loading washing machine can be found here.*bonus tip: keep your frontloading washing machine door open between uses. This allows the drum to fully dry and can prevent a musty smell from accumulating in the machine.
7. … And your dryer
In addition to clearing the lint trap after each use, the lint trap and dryer should be vacuumed regularly. Remove the lint trap, and use the nozzle of your vacuum to remove any lint that has accumulated inside the dryer. If your dryer has a moisture sensor, clean it with a rag and mild detergent. The moisture sensors are typically two metal strips found near the lint tray or on the back of the drum. The exhaust on the reverse of your dryer should be cleaned annually, a buildup of lint can become a fire hazard and prevents your dryer from running as efficiently as possible. Follow your user manual for maintenance instructions.8. Dusting
